2019 Home Brew Competition

Free* 4.5-6.0 gallons of Amber Wort provided

[ must be picked up Sunday 8/11 12:00-1:30 ]

We will fill YOUR sanitized carboy or bucket with an approximate 14.5 deg Lovibond color un hopped / un boiled* wort] ( pasteurized to 180 degrees for 10 min )– starting gravity around 1.058 (14.5 plato ). We will provide the malt bill / mash details when registration closes on 8/9 via email as well as on wort pick up day 8/11. Wort will be chilled to less then 90 degrees Fahrenheit for safe transporting.

A $10 cash deposit will be collected on wort delivery day and returned when (3) 22oz bottles are dropped off for judging. If a beer does not return for entry in the competition the deposit is forfeit. A person can pick up a second carboy for someone not able to attend the pick up day ( Sunday 8/11) if scheduled ahead of time.

You will create a beer for judging – all extra steps ( boiling, bottling etc ) and ingredients [ i.e additional fermentables, hops, spices, yeast … ] will be provided by you, the home brewer. Judging will happen 39 days after wort pickup. Judges will be chosen by BPH head brewer, Drew Cluley.

Judging will be for Best of Show ~ judged under the guidelines of the style you declare ~ as in “most desirable beer” to be scaled up for our Autumn seasonal release.

The beer can be brewed to any style the home brewer chooses, within the confines of the ability of us to re-create the beer on our large system ( i.e. no ice bocks ). The home brewer will provide a copy of their recipe ~ and must indicate the style they wish to be judged under. [ i.e Pale Ale, American Amber Ale, ESB, Amber Lager, Alt, Belgian Abby Ale etc. ] We will be referencing the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines: https://www.bjcp.org/docs/2015_Guidelines_Beer.pdf

Prizes will be:

1st place:Brew the winning beer recipe at BPH with head brewer Drew Cluley, lunch and beer(s) provided. A Beardslee Mug Club membership; for the remainder of our inaugural MC year ( till April 1 2020), including tee shirt.
(6) 32oz Crowlers of the winning beer.
$50 gift certificate to BPH.

2nd place: A Beardslee Mug Club membership; for the remainder of our inaugural MC year ( till April 1 2020), tee shirt NOT included.
(2) 32 oz Crowlers of the winning beer.
$25 Gift Certificate to BPH.

3rd place: A Beardslee Mug Club membership; for the remainder of our inaugural MC year ( till April 1 2020), tee shirt NOT included.

Deadline to sign up:
August 9th at 12 noon. [ limit of 50 entries ] - 1 carboy of wort per entrant.
An email will go out on the afternoon of August 9th to confirm your participation.

Wort Give Away Day
August 11th ( Sunday ) 12:00 – 1:30pm @ BPH in Bothell.
On or after September 14th (3) 22oz bottles are due at BPH – must be delivered by 8pm Monday September 16th.
September 19th ( Thursday ) - Judging will take place.
September 20th ( Friday ) Winners announced ( via email )
The winning brew will be brewed between Sept 23rd and October 4th. For release near the end of October. There will be a release party ( end of October ) and all competition brewers are invited back. First pint of the winning brew is $1 for competitors, and all of our crowlers will be available for $5/ea during the release party.
